Highlights: Dr. Sameer Rohadia explained Statistics and Big Data, Application areas of Big Data, Role of Statistics in Big Data Analytics and Job Opportunities of Big Data Analytics. He started his session with the quote “Information is the oil of 21st century and Analytics is the combustion engine.” He defined Big Data as extremely large data sets that may be analysed computationally to reveal patterns, trends and associations, especially relating to human behaviour and interactions. Big Data handles the combination of volume, variety and velocity of data into innovative forms of information. Trillions of data is generated through social media platforms, e – commerce websites and Internet of Things (IoT). There are three types of Big Data: Structured Data (eg. xls files, csv files, DBF files etc), Semi Structured Data (eg. Emails where the Emails address are structured while the message of the Email is Unstructured) and Unstructured Data (eg. JPG files, MP3 files, MPEG files etc.). Data Cleaning, Data Visualization and Data Interpretation of these Big Data can be done through various softwares like Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, MS Excel etc. He told that Big Data is applied in Banking and Financial Services, Communication, Media and Entertainment, Healthcare, Manufacturing and Natural Resources, Transportation, Education, Retail and Wholesale, Insurance etc. He suggested about the various job opportunities in the above areas as a Data Analyst, Data Engineer and Data Scientist.
